I’ve recently received several “invitations” to join various individual’s on-line networks. You know many of these (Facebook, MySpace, Classmates, etc.). For the business professional it seems that “LinkedIn” is emerging as one of the most popular; at least as judged by recent articles and just the evidence in my e-mail box.
I’m not a big fan of these sites, but I guess that they serve a purpose. What we need is one just for machine vision professionals. Perhaps the AIA might consider expanding machinevisiononline.org to include networking? They have a jobs section on that site, but it never gained much traction.
What really troubles me though is the increase in the numbers. Just another sign of the times. People are either in fear of losing their jobs or already have, so they’re out doing networking. The national jobless numbers were worse again last month. Let’s hope this thing turns around very soon.

I’ve got to admit I registered for LinkedIn in hope of finding a job.
While it was quite interesting to find long lost people and contacts (including one young lady from my days at MSU) it has proven to be quite useless for anything productive.
I think the media hype along with the lack of employment opportunities has promoted these sites way past their capabilities. I’m sure their registration numbers will drop if jobs start to return. Surely, as you stated, a sign of the times.
Gee Dave, Maybe I should send you and invite to “join my network” …… just kidding :).
